We constantly tell our students to take notes and to make notes, but have we really taught them how they can do it? I suggest you teach the students the following note making/taking strategies by Alvermann, D.E., Phelps, S., Gillis, V.R. (2010) Content area reading and literacy: Succeeding in today's diverse Classroom. Boston: Allyn & Bacon:
Two columns notes
Use a short paragraph to model this/ or a short unit of a content textbook
1. use an unlined page ( a note book which is lined can also work well). divide the page lengthwise by folding it into two parts. the left column must be one third of the page, the right column about two thirds of the page.
2. Record notes from the passage you are reading ( you can pretend to switch from being a student to a teacher, and so on as you model, using a board works well for students to see all your steps) on the right column.
3. Review the notes by making sense of them in your own words. Write the main concept next to each section of your notes on the left column.
4. If the notes are unclear, refer back to the paragraph and add the missing information.
5. Study the notes by folding the paper so that only the left column is visible. This will serve as focal points for recalling the information.
